One of the most popular place in the heart of Beijing, Nanluoguxiang is increasingly getting into the good books of youngsters and tourists, it get so crowded especially during weekends that one even finds it hard to move. There are so many boutiques, interesting gift shops, cosy cafes etc, but away from the main alley, lies many more historical places, there are numerous former residences of warlords, ancient princes and princesses, some of them have been converted into museums, while most still remain as unmarked residence, it was said that current Chinese President Xi Jinping’s elder sister and mum lives in one of the hutong and had several plainclothes security officers 24/7 on duty. The residents here were mainly workers and their families who had been allocated a housing unit here since the 80s, they felt safe because of such an important family is living in the area. Despite the considerably high rental, I stayed here for a couple of weeks in late 2019 for its richness in history, culture and of course, the convenience of the location where two main subway lines meet. I would say it’s a very interesting place with different character throughout the day and night. This is an approved assembly, a very peaceful one with children and elderlies. The assembly started at 3pm and everyone was just queuing up to get into the Chater Garden, while others are queuing up to get protest posters and new year banners. ⁣ ⁣ At 4:20 pm, a plainclothes police announced the termination of the assembly in the crowd. The assembly immediately became an illegal one and 5 minutes after the announcement, rounds of tear gas gun sound on our right and when we turned back, tear gas smoke was already at our back. ⁣ ⁣ Roads are blocked by police, with no signs on where to leave, trapping people in the area. You hear and smell tear gas, everyone was in panic and it took us 30 minutes to get into the MTR station, which was just next to the assembly point.
