復活島的石像是世界奇景，但這樣的奇景其實需要有足夠的人口與文明傳承才能有效打造，進而使之可以完成。但復活島上的文明又是如何運作的？

這篇來自【CUP】上的文章，美國的人類學家 Carl Lipo、Robert DiNapoli、Mark Madsen 及 Terry Hunt嘗試用新的電腦運算模型提出解釋，也讓我們進對於該島上的文明有更新的理解。

美國的人類學家 Carl Lipo、Robert DiNapoli、Mark Madsen 及 Terry Hunt，上週三在期刊「公共科學圖書館：綜合」（PLOS ONE）發表研究，探索為何幾百年間處於隔絕的復活節島群體，能在島上發展出多元文化。

復活節島面積僅 163.6 平方公里，距離最近且有人居住的皮特肯群島（Pitcairn）亦有 2,075 公里。面積狹小加上地理限制，Lipo 指：「我們認為，當人們來到這座島，就再無其他地方可去，亦沒有其他人進來。」

過往有證據表明，太平洋上不同的「神秘島」（mystery islands），可能正因為孤立，終令島上人口消失。考古紀錄顯示，前人可能選擇放棄這些島嶼，或在與其他島嶼的交流中斷後步向滅絕。Lipo 同意當這些地方變得孤立，裡面的人便更加難生存。而拉帕努伊人與歐洲接觸時，總人口估計為 3,000 至 4,000，他們分成不同氏族，以及由幾十人所組成「小型、分散、相對獨立的社區」。同一社區的人，會一同居住於數百米空間內。

DiNapoli 認為：「如果擁有許多不同的細小亞群體，由於人們因而區隔開來，最終便能保持豐富的多樣性。」研究人員利用電腦模擬復活節島昔日居民獨特的生活環境，在模型中，不同亞群體的會圍繞石像平台或舉行儀式的地方 ahu 居住，並設置了幾種交流方式進行測試。他們發現，若互動受限，即使總人口稀少，只要亞群體愈多，整個群體保留潛在有利文化的機會便愈大。
