If you feel a lump in your breast, you should always get it checked. However, not all breast lumps are cancerous. They can also be benign (non-cancerous growth). The size and shape of breasts vary and everyone’s breasts are different. In women, they are affected by your hormone. They can change in size and shape during pregnancy and throughout your monthly cycle. These are some of the common benign breast lumps: 🌸Fibroadenoma — The lump is smooth and moves easily under the skin. It is normally painless but it can be painful and tender especially just before your period. Fibroadenoma is the most common type of benign breast lump and you’re most likely to get one between the ages of 16 and 24. 🌸Breast cyst —They are round fluid-filled sacs in your breast tissue. You can have either one or multiple cysts in your breasts. Breast cysts can feel soft or hard and can be any size. Some people may find the cysts to be uncomfortable/painful especially before their period. Breast cysts are more common for women from the age of 35-50. They also can come and go and change based on your hormone levels. 🌸 Breast infection (Mastitis/abscess) — Your breast will become hot and swollen. You may also get a fever. It’s most common in breastfeeding women as it is caused by build up of milk. It can also occur in women who smoke, if you have weak immune system (e.g diabetes), or have any procedures done to the breast (e.g breast filler injection). 🌸 Fat necrosis — It usually happens due to scar tissue forming after an injury to your breast. It feels like a firm round lump and it is usually painless. It can affect women of any age and it’s most common in women with large breasts. 🌸 Phyllodes tumour — It is usually benign, but can also be malignant (cancerous). It tends to grow very quickly. It’s more common between the age of 40 and 50. 👉🏽Men can also develop these benign growths, albeit they are rare. Please have your breasts checked if you develop any of the following symptoms.
