The high speed rail #高鐵 provides a real alternative to flying that connects Hong Kong to different cities in China. However, the construction of Hong Kong West Kowloon Station #西九站 and the Express Rail Link (Hong Kong Section) has been a controversial issue since 2010. Let’s have a look at the major ones:⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This 26-kilometre project, which is the most expensive rail line on a per-kilometre basis in the world, costed HKD$86.4 billion (USD$11 billion), which was 30% more than the initial estimate. There are problems of over-budget, leaks and delay. The construction also missed its 2015 deadline by 3 years.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Moreover, under the joint checkpoint plan #一地兩檢, Hong Kong effectively gives up its jurisdiction over a quarter of the station, where immigration and customs processes are performed by mainland law enforcement agents. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This arrangement was intended for faster immigration procedures. However, some also considered it ceding of land to the mainland, which has a different legal system to that of Hong Kong.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Make sure you check the location of the train terminus before booking. The West Kowloon (Hong Kong) terminus is located at the city centre, which can take you to Guangzhou one hour quicker than the existing train service.
