依據環保署統計資料，國內每年約產生27萬噸廢塑膠，易崩解為塑膠碎片(小於5 mm即稱為塑膠微粒)；近期《科學》期刊研究指出，海洋中鱸魚的幼魚接觸到塑膠微粒後，變得只吃塑膠微粒而不吃原本的主食浮游生物；而在充滿塑膠微粒的環境中出生的魚卵，孵化和長大成成魚的機率都較低。
圖中幼魚體內清楚可見塑膠微粒的存在，由上到下分別為無塑膠微粒、一般濃度及高濃度飼養的幼魚。在一般濃度中平均每隻幼魚有1.4顆塑膠微粒，高濃度則有7.5顆塑膠微粒且完全沒有攝食浮游動物殘留。
塑膠垃圾不適合以掩埋或焚化方式處理，惟有循環再利用是最好的途徑，經濟部公告的《經濟部資源再生綠色產品審查認定辦法》即針對廢塑膠產製塑膠粒、塑膠片的業者提供認證申請管道，以提升再生綠色產品的環境效益，避免塑膠微粒對環境造成的危害！
