Made in the 7th or 8th century AD, this small wooden panel records the legend of the ‘Silk Princess’, who smuggled the secret of silk into the kingdom of Khotan, in the west of modern-day China – zoom in to see the story 🔍
The princess is shown in the middle of the panel – she has hidden silk cocoons and mulberry tree seeds in her headdress, as the woman on the left indicates.
Behind the princess sits a four-armed deity who protects the silk, and another woman weaves silk threads into cloth at a loom 🧵
