李嘉誠旗下的維港投資(Horizons Ventures)有份投資的雲端視像會議軟件公司Zoom Video Communications(ZM)4月中在美國納斯特克掛牌上市,第一個交易日的收市價竟比招股價36美元勁升超過7成,現時市值超過160億美元,風頭一時無兩,連名氣更大、同日上市的Pinterest都被比下去。連誠哥都看好的Zoom是怎樣的公司?在上市首日就一躍成為身家達32億美元億萬富豪的華裔創辦人又是什麼來頭呢?⠀

Zoom創辦人兼CEO袁征(Eric Yuan)在中國山東出生,爸爸是礦工,小學四年級時為了賺錢,開始收集建築廢料,回收銅。由於工廠只需要金屬,他便在鄰居家後面的雞舍裡燒掉多餘的廢物,最終卻令鄰居的小屋被燒毀。⠀

袁征在山東科技大學學習應用數學和計算機科學,22歲時在攻讀碩士學位期間結婚。比爾蓋茨等企業家的成功深深吸引了他,袁征深信自己有一天能夠創辦一家公司,並把目光投向了美國市場的科技熱潮。後來,在一年半內袁征八次申請美國簽證被拒。⠀

在1997年的夏天,他終於成功加入一家總部位於美國加州、成立了兩年的視像會議軟件公司Webex,這家公司後來於2000年7月上市,並在2007年被思科(Cisco)以32億美元收購。不久後,思科任命袁征負責Webex的工程團隊,但到了2010年,袁征對公司的產品不滿意,認為服務不夠好,運行速度慢,綫路上的人一多就會讓視像變得斷斷續續。由於說服不了上司讓自己重新開發Webex,他在2011年決定離開思科自己創業。⠀

他表示:「思科更專注於社交網絡,試圖打造一個企業版的Facebook上。」⠀

為了說服妻子,袁征告訴她說:「我知道這是一段漫長而艱難的旅程,但如果我不去嘗試,我會後悔的。」⠀

袁征請朋友們投資了25萬美元,還有一些對袁征有信心的投資者例如是Webex的前CEO Subrah Iyar等給了他300萬美元,最終創辦了一家名叫Saasbee的公司。幾個月後,袁征想再次對準視像會議市場,但當時的競爭者有微軟的Skype、Google的Hangouts,思科仍是領先者,還有初創公司BlueJeans Network。要想在視像會議市場中分一杯羹非常困難。⠀

不過,Zoom的產品在網速較慢的環境都能順暢運行,而當時每台主機的月費只是9.99美元,比競爭對手更便宜,服務質素遠遠拋離其他產品。Zoom視像會議中的虛擬背景功能可以掩蓋凌亂的辦公室,允許用戶選擇不同地點做背景。⠀

2013年9月Zoom的B輪融資由維港投資領投,共籌650萬美元。2015年又從風險投資公司新興資本那裡融資3000萬美元。據報,現在李嘉誠仍然是Zoom的常客。⠀

Zoom的業務不斷擴張至其他更大的企業客戶,Slack、Uber、Gap都是其客戶。除了商業上,Zoom還在其他領域改變著社會。在鳳凰城兒童醫院長期住院的孩子利用Zoom和iPad在虛擬的支持小組中見面和上學。醫院人員用Zoom來參加會議、主持手術病例會議,並與病人溝通。紅杉資本在2017年初為Zoom進行了D輪融資,投資了1.15億美元,使其估值達到10億美元。⠀

Zoom在上市前向美國證券交易委員會提交的監管文件中指出,在美國500家最大的公司中,有一半以上的公司至少有一個Zoom付費賬戶,但很少有公司簽訂過大額合同,這意味著未來其有開展大規模業務的途徑。Zoom的海外業務僅佔其總業務的18%。向英國、日本、法國等需求最大的市場進行擴張是未來的一個發展方向。⠀
