——— A little discussion on race? I’ve always thought a lot about the terrifying topic of “race”. We do not like to comment on it, we prefer seeing no “race”, we shy away from the difficult intricacies. All these thoughts came back to me after watching #shangchi . Surprisingly, as a non-ABC, I do feel inspired by the movie. There’s so much to explore in our Asian culture, so much to be grateful for. Then I came across many passages with the hashtag #Asianpride, and I began to wonder is it only appropriate because “Asians” is often broadly categorised as “middle situated” in the hierarchy of “race superiority” in mainstream media? Because we have a history of being suppressed? It’s intriguing to think that a post hashtagging #Whitepride instead would attract a lot of hate. So - can pride only be justified by sufferings, and not everyone is entitled to (publicly declaring) being proud of their racial identity? I’ve been subjected to racial discrimination before, eg being thrown eggs on the streets/ asked to “be with your own kind” at a club. While I could call myself a “victim”, should I hate on the fact that we’re “distinguished” by races? Somehow ironically, I am proud of my own race, does that make me a “racist”? Should all of us just be ONE race? These are all very sensitive topics that everyone avoids, because we all like to be politically correct. We slowly sulk and form our own close minded thoughts. Although I did wish, so hard, since young that there’s a magic recipe uprooting discrimination, and that we can be proud of our identities while making peace with the world… Sadly there’s none. Things like this need to be discussed, reviewed, and disseminated to deepen human’s understandings towards an often “scary” topic. I was completely mesmerized when I first saw the movie Death on the Nile as a young boy. Apart from the brilliant storyline & plot intricacies, the stellar cast — from Mia Farrow & Simon MacCorkindale to Bette Davis & Jane Birkin — made this movie one of the best whodunnits I’ve ever seen. Of course the costumes & jewellery especially those worn by Lois Chiles added to its allure. I had never seen such glamour portrayed with such impressive attention to detail on the silver screen before. Deservedly, costume designer Anthony Powell won an Oscar for Best Costume design. • Fast forward a couple of decades & I found myself in Egypt visiting all the incredible places depicted in the movie such as the Temples at Abu Simbal & Karnak. Imma first gen VNese American, born and raised in the IE / LA. Growing up was tricky because of the conflicting perspectives of Western / Eastern culture. My parents came to the US as teens, so the their values were deeply Asian, an approach sometimes directly opposite of the typical American perspective. I felt they were way too strict, so rebelled often and we beefed a lot. I dropped out of med school and traveled the world to pursue art. I ended up in VN and lived for over a decade. After immersing myself in the culture, learning the full set of values and cultural intricacies of my people, I learned that my parents weren’t ultra strict jerks - they were just hella traditional in their mindset. This understanding helped me frame the past differently, and aided me in moving past the annoyance and trauma of it all.
