[Zhao Mausoleum, Shenyang] Another set of pictures I have taken at the Zhao Mausoleum, it brought me closer to what I have read in historical records. Although like most other emperors who had more than one wife, Huang Taiji （皇太极) also have concubines but he devoted his feelings to Lady Borjigit who was from Mongolia. Lady Borjigit gave birth to Huang Taiji's eighth son, who did not live long and died later on. She was left in weak health and became seriously ill three years later. Upon hearing the news that Lady Borjigit was on her deathbed, Huang Taiji reportedly left an active battlefield to be by her side. However that did not bring her back to life. Lady Borjigit died on 22 October 1641 and was interred in the Zhao Mausoleum. Her death devastated Huang Taiji, who spent much of his time mourning her, to the detriment of his rapidly deteriorating health. The Japanese Cemetery Park was established in 1891 to serve the burial needs of Japanese residents in Singapore. Said to be the largest and best-preserved Japanese cemetery in Southeast Asia, the site measures 30,000 sq m and has an estimated 910 tombstones. Those interred here include Japanese businessmen, professionals, and prostitutes in Singapore, as well as a number of war dead from World War II. At the far end of this maze field lies two hidden tombs from the Qing dynasty, they belongs to the Sumalagu (苏麻喇姑) and Noble Lao (老贵人). Sumalagu was a legendary figure in history, she was initially an attendant of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang (孝庄皇太后) but eventually became her close confidante in the palace which was full of dangers, she taught young Emperor Kangxi manchu language and helped raise Yuntao, one of Kangxi’s son. The emperor showed Sumalagu great amount of respect and built a mausoleum for her after she passed away, this was a treatment only for the imperial family. However scriptwriters again distorted facts and misled people by fabricating romance relationship between them. Noble Lao was one of Emperor Yongzheng’s concubines but it was unknown why was she buried in Eastern Qing tombs instead as her husband and the other concubines were interred in Western Qing tomb.
