Day 1: "learn jazz violin from a beginner violinist" series. Over the next few days, I will show you an organic approach to learning jazz improvisation. We're going to learn a tune called Blue Bossa. This is the first part but the last part also has the same chords so we've effectively learned 2/3 of the song already. The first actual step would be to learn the melody but here we are working on the harmony. One important thing to understand is that songs can be harmonized a number of different ways but in this instance, we are lucky in that most players use these harmonies (chord changes in jazz lingo). When you learn other songs, be very aware that there could be different chord changes and they might not match what you have on your sheet music (I recommend learning by ear as soon as possible though). One such example is the song Body And Soul, nowadays people are playing the music school version chord changes but if you listen to recordings from the 1930s such as Coleman Hawkins, Kanye West, Louis Armstrong, you will encounter completely different harmonies. So learning the chords to a tune helps a lot, I would also recommend listening to different recordings to get more familiar with the song. More tips to come over the next few days. Be sure to follow!
