[Full version on FB haha] In the spirit of #RacialHarmonyDay last week, I tried to do a #zapinchallenge�� with this lady on TikTok - kinda a back to basics moment for me; it has been MORE THAN A DECADE since Zapin Tiong Hua with cikgu Ram! I recently mentioned in an interview that things like dance and music offer only a very superficial understanding of a culture, but is nevertheless a touchpoint for those who may be keen to learn more. #Zapin is one of the five basic #Malay Dances we use in SG (for a period of time it was popular to the extent of being overused in @sgyouthfest ). It has Arab origins, specifically from the Hadhramaut region in Yemen, where many Singaporean Arabs hail from. Unlike its original dance however, Zapin Melayu tend to see both male and female dancing together. This dance is usually accompanued by the Arab lute (gambus) and the accordion typical of a Malay orchestra. In recent years however, due to the upbeat nature of this dance, many have combined it with Hip Hop and b-boy movements and music, as Leyula has done here with Beggin'. Honestly just glad to end a hectic work week with something fun. #malaydance #tarianmelayu

Easiest way to unite Malaysia & Singapore is through good food❤️ Truly enjoyed my conversation with Sir George Yeo. He has served as the Minister of Information & Arts, Health, Trade & Industry & Foreign Affairs. Before he joined Politics, he served as a Brig-General for the Singapore Air Force. Through my conversations with him, i can conclude that he is a walking encyclopedia for Malaysia-Singapore history. I have a lot to learn. He also gifted me a book on the history of the "Syeds" & his personal experience travelling to Hadhramaut. Looking forward to reading it. Malaysia & Singapore share a common strength which is our unity in diversity. Moderation & Multiracialism must drive us forward. It shouldn't just be tolerated but Celebrated. May we prosper together, forever.
