【從哥大到麥肯錫、Microsoft、聯發科，英文用字的原則竟然都是同一個？】

在職場或學界，講話、用字「精確」常常是專業的象徵。 “The solution is not good.” “The proposal is great.” 以前在賓大和哥大求學時，教授們常常問學生：Can you be a bit more precise? 這也是現在我在企業內訓時常常問學員、或在上課時反問學生的問題。

在英文學習上要增進用字的精確度，最快的方式不是找一本好字典或字彙書。字典給我們字的用法跟定義，但無法帶給我們「思維」的精確度。

一般人想到用字精確度，都從下面2方面著手。

✔︎ 搭配詞上:
把 very clean 調整成 spotlessly clean、
把 full support 升級成 unqualified support、
把 quick reply 升級成 prompt reply。

✔︎ 用字精簡上：
把 very angry 改成 furious
把 very happy 改成 delighted 等等的用法。

但在這篇文章中，我想要特別強調：比「言語精確度」更重要的是「思維精確度」。

什麼叫做 The solution is bad? 有可能要說的是：

➤ The solution can be costly. (所費不貲)
➤ The solution will generate only short-term effects. (只有短程效益)
➤ The solution will not be popular with those in managerial positions. (管理階層不會喜歡)
➤ The solution is far from comprehensive. (不夠全面)

比思考有沒有比 bad 更漂亮的用字更重要的反而是，
「到底什麼叫做 the solution is bad?」，這才能真正展現出我們的專業，在學習英文時，同時把思維深度也加深。

原句直譯為「在影廳營運商中贏得很少朋友」，太過直覺且不符合中文語境。此時我們可以換另一個角度思考原文想傳達什麼意思，將「贏得很少朋友」轉化為「招致不滿」，兼顧英文原意且更符合中文邏輯。
