Since I was six months old, weekends mostly involved being in the local rainforests around Kuching with mum and Dad, and family friends. My parents know the local and Latin names of many plants, birds and insects we have here. When we know their names, we see them differently, like they’re characters instead of abstract concepts or collective nouns. So these were my informal lessons of nature, mum & dad passing on to me through oral traditions, the ways of our forests. Mum asked what I wanted to do when I got out of quarantine and I said — go to the jungle! We hadn’t been to this spot in like 25 years ?? I didn’t remember it at all but Mum did.
