Following Cathay's downsizing, another round of job cull is hounding aviation sector workers, this time, at Jardine Aviation Services. Next month, the ground handling service provider will rid about 340 of its employees due to financial struggles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Citing the ending of the govenrment's Employment Support Scheme, the lack of further subsidies and a gloomy industry outlook, Jardine called the decision a last resort to make way for restructuring plans. According to a circular issued by the firm's CEO to workers, flight volume in October was only 17 percent of pre-crisis levels. Most of that data was attributable to cargo flights, which has been of little help to the passenger service-oriented business spending more than double of what it makes each month. The handful of worker surviving the layoffs can stay on under a furlough scheme, or an unpaid leave programme extended until next March. Even at then, job security is not guaranteed. In the event of a continued failure of business conditions, Jardine warned it may "make certain adjustments" to the existing employment contract next year. Otherwise, workers can also opt for resignation and receive an ex-gratia payment. Wong Yu-loy, an organiser of the Confederation of Trade Unions, says dismissed members of the group will be compensated according to Hong Kong’s labour laws. That means Jardine will be offsetting severance payments with MPF contributions made for relevant employees.
