This is a tour de force. No wonder it is called #thecarouselofdesire. Originally I was sucked into this book by the cover because I thought it was some 1930s extravaganza. It is not. The only complaint is that it is quite long (645 pages)and there are too many characters which keep getting added as the book goes on. They are all rich. They are all rich and stylish and having sex. They are all rich and stylish and French and having sex. They also have nice food. An enjoyable and whimsical novel of the feasts of love. I especially liked the character of the parrot called Copernicus who repeats the name of the woman’s lover in front of her husband and he now keeps asking who it is that the parrot regularly mentions. It is a candid and farcical side effect of erotic fantasies. Very European. Never go to someone's house as a guest only to comment on the physical appearance of the women in the house. Comments such as, " Akak terlebih sihat saya nampak" or "Nampak macam Bibik" when a woman is clearly relaxing at home or carrying her child around the house in a baby sling will never earn you brownie points- ESPECIALLY when you, giving out the comment, are also more rotund than when they last met you and certainly do not look your best. You might find that they will not be in a mood to be friendly or even wait on you hand and foot as they do with other guests. The women have probably much to say to you having clocked you from head to toe but are too polite to say it. Consider the fact that women who are "sihat" spend more time caring for their family members and working to earn an income in these troubled times and those that are carrying their babies in a sling care more about their children and actually look after the spawn that they produce than they do about spending time on the latest fashions or putting on makeup and false eyelashes to the detriment of child and family. Clearly this is an alien concept to you. That's why THEIR marriage lasts longer and are happier than yours which will be a far better and more satisfying insult.
