I’ve been asked so many questions about surgical training career pathway in the UK.
Here are some facts about surgical training and career pathway:
🏅You will start surgical training after you complete your 2-year foundation junior doctor years or equivalent to housemanship (FY1/FY2).
🏅You will typically apply during your FY2 year to core surgical training programme or a run-through surgery training programme from ST1 to ST8. If you apply via core surgery, then you need to apply to ST3 higher surgery training programme after you complete your CT2. You can also apply via Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) route if you’re interested in academia (which means that you will have time allocated to do research and clinical work). The applications are very competitive. Therefore, you need to prepare your portfolio very well.
🏅Surgical training in the UK takes about 8 years or more after finishing foundation/housemanship. From CT/ST1 to ST8.
🏅You can also take a few years out to do Masters/PhD during your training (which means that you will have an additional 3-4 years on top of your training years to complete your training). This is where I am at. 😁
🏅After completing your training (CCT - Certificate of Completion of Training), you can sub-specialise in your area of interest and do a fellowship for a couple of years. You will become a Consultant Surgeon in your area of interest.
🏅In total, including medical school, it will take about 15-20 years (or even longer) before you become a Consultant Surgeon (Specialist).
🏅You will also need to pass MRCS and FRCS exams during your training and various other work-based assessments that you need to do every year as part of your surgical portfolio and curriculum.
Yes, surgical training in the UK is long, you will feel that it is taking forever, you still need to take exams even when you’re in your late 30s... (the UK system is also different compared to Malaysian or American system) and very structured but do not let the long training programme put you off surgery. I will post about how to get into surgical training in my next post. Hope this post is useful for aspiring surgeons out there!

Tengok bideo ni takde bukti pon yang menunjokkan Hishammuddin menghisap vape. Setahu ayah beliau ni memang dari kecil menghidap asmah. Kamu pihak pembangang jangan cuba nak burokkan Menteri PN.
Di musim covid ni orang ada sakit lelah disuroh pakai topeng muka.. memang kurang lah napas dia. Jadi ayah yakin sebenarnya beliau tengah pakai inhaler.. sebab asap vape orang sedot hembos. Tapi inhaler orang sedot dan telan.
