Rasang and the Spirit World: Rituals, Symbols and Initiation in the Life of a Bidayuh 'Dayung Borih' at Bau, Sarawak . by KENDY MITOT . Dayung Borih, or shamans, play a central role in sustaining the Bidayuh culture and belief system. Dayung Borih (female) and Pinguguoh/ Pinyigar (male) serve important functions in many of the community's ritual ceremonies, since they link humans and the spiritual world. When in a state of trance, shamans are able to travel to the spirit world to communicate with all types of entities, including the world-spirit. . In the past, Bidayuh customary knowledge, cultural worldview and artistic practice are passed down principally as an oral tradition. Customary shamanic lore and ritual are cultural knowledge that have yet to be comprehensively recorded and studied. While these ritual performances may appear insignificant or quaint to outsiders, the Bidayuh community's commitment to preserve them suggest they continue to be important means of connecting the community to a larger cosmology that is made up of a multitude of spiritual worlds. . In this sharing session, Kendy will discuss the subject by focusing on a Bidayuh's cultural perspective, exploring the intrinsic interpretation/ native exegesis element from the point of view of Bidayuh shamans. The talk will explore this larger question through the ritual use of 'rasang (traditional woodcarving)'. The analysis of the rasang's form and content will then be contextualised within the Bidayuh customary worldview to explain how the 'rasang' operates as a symbolic representation of a different concept of identity. . ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Kendy Mitot is an artist of the indigenous Bidayuh tribe of Sarawak state. The Bidayuhs represent 8% of Sarawak's population.
