創作背景：
2018年2月6日大地震造成花蓮嚴重災情，有感於災後地方石材產業受損嚴重，由在地圖文創作者Duncan發起，結合精通石雕技藝的三位藝術家，希冀藉由各自所長，利用具在地文化價值之素材共同創作一象徵重振精神的公共藝術作品，籌備期間惠納地方人士捐贈與各級單位之支持，本作品才能完整呈現於大眾面前。作品以破損石材堆疊後進行雕刻創作，並選址於此，即前身為舊監獄遺跡的自由廣場。而平日於自強外役監獄教授石雕技藝的藝術家們，亦盼於本古蹟場域傳達“拼回自己的人生”之正面附加喻意。

Creative intent:
People get hurt, but the strong ones pick up the pieces and put them back together again. Similarly, Hualien will not be defeated by an earthquake, because setbacks make us stronger.

Creative background:
On February 6, 2018, Hualien was devastated by a massive earthquake. Seeing that Hualien’s stone industry suffered major loss, a local illustrator proposed building a public art display out of local materials. With the help of three master sculptors, donations from the public, and the support of the local government, the piece was finally completed and unveiled. Rocks broken in the earthquake were stacked and sculpted, and the sculpture was erected at Freedom Square on the grounds of Hualien’s former prison. The sculptors, who teach sculpting to inmates at Ziciang Minimum-Security Prison, also hope that erecting the sculpture at this historic site conveys the positive meaning of “putting one’s life back together.”

JR東日本　総武本線・東金線
駅舎に接して単式ホーム1面1線があり、その奥に島式ホーム1面2線がある。さらに単式ホームには切欠きホームがあるため、あわせて2面4線となる地上駅。
1897年（明治30年）5月1日に総武鉄道の駅として開業。
1907年（明治40年）9月1日に総武鉄道が買収され、帝国鉄道庁の駅となる。
1911年（明治44年）11月1日　東金線東金 - 当駅間開業。
1945年（昭和20年）8月13日　太平洋戦争による空襲（機銃掃射）に遭い、駅に停車していた貨車に積まれていた高射砲四門と弾薬に引火。駅員や陸軍近衛第3師団将兵が消火作業に当たったものの、爆発・炎上し、駅舎およびホームが全壊。駅員15名、将兵27名の計42名が死亡した。
1957年（昭和32年）8月　1945年に起きた成東駅空襲の慰霊碑が建立される。
1999年（平成11年）12月　総武線快速電車乗り入れ開始。
2008年（平成20年）3月にリニューアルにより外観を洋風に改装。
2012年（平成24年）12月　跨線橋新設と同時にホームにエレベータ設置、旧跨線橋撤去。
2018年（平成30年）に駅南口ターミナル整備完了。
2018年（平成30年）度の1日平均乗車人員は2,846人。

Opened on May 1, 1897.
On August 13, 1945, the station was hit by a raid (machine gun shooting) due to the Pacific War, igniting four Antiaircraft gun and ammunition loaded on a wagon. Despite the firefighting work by station personnel and the 3rd Division Army Guard, the station building and platform were completely destroyed. A total of 42 people were killed, including 15 station staff and 27 soldiers.
In August 1957, a monument to air raid in 1945 was erected.
In March 2008, the exterior was renovated in a Western style.
The station south exit terminal construction was completed in 2018.
The average number of passengers per day in 2018) was 2,846.
