    女多男少一直是美國高教惱人的問題, 最近幾年又變得更嚴重。2020 到 2021 學年度, 有59.5% 大學生是女性, 男生只有40.5%, 足足差了將近二十個百分點。其中又以低收入家庭的白人男性最不願意上大學, 他們比低收入家庭的黑人和西語裔男生更沒意願念書。例如德州的貝勒大學男生只占四成, 這還是校方刻意壓低男生錄取標準的結果, 男生比女生的錄取率高了 7%。然後男大學生又比女大學生容易輟學。不出幾年, 美國會出現每兩個女性大學畢業生只有一個男性畢業生。

    當然很多人會說, 為什麼一定要念大學? 那張畢業證書不是必要。的確, 美國有一堆不錯的工作不要求大學學歷, 一樣可以晉升中產階級。例如很多跟房屋相關的工作 (仲介, 貸放款, 房屋裝修等等), 以及不少男生最愛的警察和軍人工作。但一般來說, 沒有學歷的人收入就是明顯低很多, 一輩子都難翻身。

    此外, 離家上大學是很多鄉下人離開同溫層的第一個機會, 也可能是他們此生唯一的機會。進入大學, 他們才有可能遇見來自四面八方, 背景不同 思想不同的人, 並學到獨立思考和批判性思考的能力。缺乏這些能力, 他們只能等著被政客耍弄欺騙。

    是否支持川普和保守派的一大關鍵就是大學學歷。投票給川普的人數隨著學歷上升而遞減。2016 和 2020 兩次總統大選中, 過半的女性投給了進步派, 而過半的男性投票給保守派。學歷不足而憤世嫉俗的白人男性正是保守派最容易拉攏的一群人。
