ครั้งนี้ไม่ใช่ครั้งแรกที่องค์การอนามัยโลกออกแถลงการณ์ล่าช้า WHO เพิ่งเตือนถึงผลเสียของการฉีดพ่นน้ำยาเคมีกำจัดเชื้อโรคพื้นที่กว้างใหญ่นอกอาคาร บนทางเดิน ถนน เพื่อลดการแพร่ระบาดของโรคโควิด-19 เป็นสิ่งที่ไม่ควรทำ เป็นการทำลายสิ่งแวดล้อม และมีอันตรายต่อผู้สัมผัส สิ้นเปลืองไม่ได้ประโยชน์ ทางกระทรวงสาธารณสุข และสมาคมโรคติดเชื้อแห่งประเทศไทยได้ออกมาเตือนเรื่องนี้ก่อนหน้าองค์การอนามัยโลกแล้ว

ย้อนหลังไปค.ศ.1997 องค์การอนามัยโลกออกแถลงการณ์การตรวจหาความไวต่อยาของเชื้อวัณโรคในประเทศที่กำลังพัฒนา ทำไม่ได้ สิ้นเปลือง และเปล่าประโยชน์ ผมออกมาโต้แย้งในปีค.ศ.1998 ว่าประเทศไทยจำเป็นต้องตรวจ เพราะถ้าไม่ทราบผลความไวต่อยา อาจให้ยารักษาไม่ตรงกับเชื้อ ทำให้เชื้อยิ่งดื้อยามากขึ้น แพร่ระบาดให้คนอื่นต่อไป ผู้แทนองค์การอนามัยโลกประจำประเทศไทยขณะนั้นตอบว่าการแนะนำของผมขาดความรับผิดชอบ เพราะต้องดึงเงินจากงบประมาณอื่นมาใช้

ผมได้ก่อตั้งทุนวิจัยวัณโรคดื้อยาในพระอุปถัมภ์สมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอเจ้าฟ้ากัลยาณิวัฒนา กรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ ศิริราชมูลนิธิ ในปีค.ศ.2001 ทำการตรวจหาความไวต่อยาของเชื้อวัณโรคให้รพ.ของรัฐฟรีทุกแห่ง ในที่สุดองค์การอนามัยโลกก็เปลี่ยนคำแนะนำใหม่ให้ทุกประเทศตรวจหาความไวของเชื้อวัณโรคต่อยาก่อนเริ่มการรักษา แต่คำแนะนำนี้ล่าช้าเกินไป หนังสือพิมพ์ Wall Street Journal ได้วิจารณ์ความผิดพลาดในการทำงานขององค์การอนามัยโลกเรื่องวัณโรคในปีค.ศ. 2012 (ดูรูป)
