Globally, the pandemic has seen a rise in suicides and attempted suicides - Malaysia🇲🇾 is no different. Malaysia recorded 468 suicide cases in the first 5 months of 2021. To put things to perspective, the total for all of 2019 was 609 and 631 in 2020. The worrying spike and news cycle showing what those struggling mentally face, have sparked conversation on Section 309 of the 🇲🇾Penal Code that make suicide attempts a crime punishable by up to a year in jail, a fine, or BOTH. This outdated law was created in 1936, a time when #MentalHealth was not fully understood. Thank you @pichaeats , @deborahenry & dear Chef Dalia for advocating and sharing the need for a more inclusive society. Wearing my 💚 ribbon proudly, courtesy of our patron for mental health - Tengku Puteri @imanabdullah. We all share a pandemic-filled joint experience; the urgent fervour and need for better #mentalhealth support. However, it’s terribly unfortunate that our national budget for psychiatric and mental health services have seen a decrease this year; when sufficient mental health support is needed by everyone - regardless their partisan stripes. Once Parliament reconvenes, I hope to again push for the need to decriminalise attempted suicide; supporting the request by the Mental Health Advisory Council, urging the government to repeal Section 309 of the Penal Code; which involves attempted suicide, a crime which is punishable by up to a year in jail, a fine or both. Dahulu diberikan peluang untuk buat “Masters” di sini bersertakan biasiswa, tetapi terpaksa menolak kerana perjuangan yang lebih besar. Malaysia 1st. Walaupun tidak dapat hadir sebagai mahasiswa di sini, sangat bermakna apbila dijemput sebagai “Keynote Speaker”. Dahulu difitnah bahawa tawaran untuk belajar di sini tidak tulen. Where are they now?
