Aches and pain don't have to come with age. This is so true. I just had a functional fitness moment with my 85 year old grandma. She's having trouble with her knees and we talk about it a lot. She enjoys getting out and being with her family and friends so she actually is quite diligent about doing her stretching and daily exercises. I took her through chair situps and chair squats. After doing a set of five situps and squats she got up and said she was feeling better than before. Like we all do after doing a workout 💕 I remember watching those YouTube videos of elderly doing modified squats and burpees and having a laugh. I realised I was doing the same thing with my grandma. When you get to that age she just wants to get up off a chair without assistance or walk around without holding onto people. Independence. Bless crossfit. ---------------- “We scale load and intensity; we do not change programs.” In other words, “the needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind.”
Why? Because everyone, of every age and ability, will benefit from the practice of functional movements.
“We say functional movements are “Natural,” meaning they are not movement patterns used only at the gym. Rather, these movements are found everywhere in human behavior and arise spontaneously as a response to life. For example, getting up out of a chair requires an air squat; picking up groceries from the floor, a deadlift; getting a five-gallon water jug onto a table, a clean; placing items on a high shelf, a shoulder press.
These are the movements life demands — whether we practice them or not — which makes them essential to independent living. When we lose the ability to perform functional movements, we also lose the ability to live independently. This is called decrepitude. By practicing these essential movements, we can stave off decrepitude and keep ourselves and our loved ones out of the nursing home.”
