    關乎政治的、歷史的、社會勞動的；詩意的、精神性的、極簡的、材料物質性的……西斯特·蓋茲（Theaster Gates）的藝術創作難以用一個形容詞概估。這位來自美國芝加哥的非裔藝術家，在過去十多年來受到國際藝壇的廣大矚目。

    蓋茲的創作關注美國的種族主義和社會政治，致力為受壓迫的黑人社區做出改變。許多人稱他為社運人士，蓋茲卻從未如此看待自己：「我是一名全職的藝術家，一名城市空間實踐者和一名不需要這些頭銜的傳道者。」蓋茲的創作皆從他所棲居的社群出發，他不斷地通過作品試問：在社群中，藝術能扮演什麼樣的角色，為社會盡一份改變的力量？

    這篇寫於去年秋天，刊登於《週刊編集》（第39期，2020年10月號）的文章爬梳蓋茲的創作實踐，從他在芝加哥的社區振興計畫、「公民掛毯」到最具代表性的「瀝青繪畫」，呈現他如何運用多種媒材聚集了人，也聚集了物質，它們皆經藝術家的改造和重塑，在不同時空下呈現新的樣貌。另一方面，這些作品也因「聚集」而「被記下」，蓋茲藉由作品挖掘了個人生命史，召喚了社群的集體記憶，將之紀錄並再現。

    蓋茲製陶也作畫；修房子亦玩音樂；蒐集並典藏文獻，同時也以藝術替美國黑人族群撰下歷史。整體來看，蓋茲的創作類型廣泛，作品型態雖相異，卻都在一個軌道上朝向同一個方向。它們是獨立出來的單一作品，但也是整個大計畫的一部分。「藝術能為社會作出什麼樣的改變？」蓋茲不斷地自我詰問。蓋茲並非一位走上街頭的社運人士，而是一名在工作室內、在居住的社區內發聲，期望以藝術之力，藉轉化之用作為另一種型態的抵抗。如同第13屆卡賽爾文件展策展人Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev所言：「西斯特·蓋茲不直接談論政治。他向我們演出政治。」（全文閱讀見連結）
