We talk so much about diversity, let's not forget biodiversity! I'd like to share with you something that's close to my heart for so many reasons.

Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) collaborates with five local communities to produce LitSara® products. SBC buys the Litsea cubeba oil (tenem in Kelabit & Lun Bawang; pahkak in Bidayuh) distilled by the communities, and then makes products from them.

LitSara® is the trademark name for Litsea cubeba, a plant with a chemical make-up that is unique to Sarawak. Combining science with the traditional knowledge of local communities, SBC registered an intellectual property (IP) for this plant.

Because of the IP, the communities receive Indigenous Knowledge Benefit Sharing (royalties) for every Litsara® product sold.

I think it’s incredible that traditional knowledge, and unique plants of our land can be IP registered, because many a times people seek knowledge from our community elders for their own profit and forget that the wisdom passed down through generations within these communities. With IP-registration, their traditional knowledge is legally owned and protected and people can still use the plants and commercialise, whilst still benefiting the community.

So many photos I wanted to post for World Indigenous Day today but I chose these, cause I miss sharing the stage and the music. The love we have for sape’ is beyond the music, it’s the stories, the fellowship, the art, the language, the rivers and rainforests. How a minority identity can survive and thrive through an instrument.

If I could ask you to support cultural arts where you can, cause those who practice it really have a great love and a mission to share something more than the product with you, and against all odds will strive to achieve that even if the road is not a straight one.
I truly believe there’s so much we can learn about ourselves and the world through indigenous arts.

Liling (At Home Semangat Gawai Version) was released in 2020 as an Alena Murang project. In 2021, fans brought their own spirit to the video and created a new edit with their own dances.

This is a traditional dance of the orang ulu peoples of Sarawak (Malaysia) and Kalimantan (Indonesia), choreographed for a large group of dancers. The steps are from both the ladies' hornbill dance and the male warrior dance.
