An Excellent Spirit Brings Lasting Promotions

“It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage. Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.” (Daniel‬ ‭6:1-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬)

Many unbelievers in the world think that to get ahead in life, they have to lie, cheat and steal. They use underhand methods to get promotions, stepping on others to climb up higher.

However, in the powerful Medo-Persian kingdom, Daniel distinguished himself in the eyes of the king by displaying an excellent spirit.

Out of one hundred and twenty princes and three presidents, Daniel was preferred above them all—not by currying favor, but just by being an excellent in all he did.

He was faithful in all his duties, and did his work excellently.

Truly capable people don’t have to resort to dirty methods to get promoted.

If you use corrupt ways to prosper, your adversaries will be able to dig up dirt to testify against you.

But when you do everything honestly and do your work well, wanting to give your best, who can fault you? Having a clear conscience is sweet and peaceful.

“A good man shall obtain favor from Yahweh, but he will condemn a man of wicked devices. A man shall not be established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.” (Proverbs‬ ‭12:2-3‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

When you see others getting promoted through dirty ways, don’t let the temptation of the shortcut cause you to stray from having your heart in the right place.

When an excellent spirit is in you, you will obtain favor from the Lord for promotion. Do your work well as worship unto Him, not to please your boss.

“And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” (Colossians‬ ‭3:23-24‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Because you are a “good man” in Christ, based on His finished work at the cross, God’s favor is yours.

Remember: favor, not labor!

Promotion through wicked ways is not a sure foundation. There are many cracks and one day it will all collapse, and the fall will be great.

Let your promotion come from relying on the grace (unmerited favor) of God. If it comes as a gift, you won’t have the stress of having to maintain it by your limited strength. God will supply the grace for you to thrive in the new role.

Pray with me: Dear Abba God, help me cultivate an excellent spirit like Daniel. I want to be promoted, but at Your timing and in Your chosen way. I want to rely on Your unmerited favor, not my stressful labor. Thank You for the abundance of grace that empowers me to work faithfully as worship unto You. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen!
