台灣和新加坡很像的地方，除了華人移民祖籍多為閩南之外，還曾經有幾年的時間同屬於一個國家——大日本帝國，在1942到1945年之間。

在1959年獨立前，新加坡一直是英國殖民地，對二次大戰時的日本來說是個鐵定要攻下的敵軍領地；1942年英國駐軍向日本投降，開始了新加坡三年的「日據時代」（他們稱為「日佔時期」），日本人還給新加坡取了一個相當和風的名字，「昭南特別市」。參觀新加坡的博物館，會看到一個這段時期常出現的字「Sook Ching」，也就是漢字的「肅清」，指日本人清除反抗勢力的行動，無論在地的華人還是原為殖民者的英國人，都是日本迫害的對象。

跟台灣人比起來，新加坡人對於日佔時期歷史評價明顯比較負面，我猜這是因為日本統治時期很短而且正值戰亂，不像台灣人有嚐到帝國體制下的甜頭；此外新加坡的華人認同對象仍然是以中國大陸為優先，因此在二次大戰史觀上也採取比較像國民黨和共產黨的反日立場。

In addition to Hokkien culture, Taiwan and Singapore have another thing in common: they were both ruled by Japanese Empire toward the end of WWII. The British troop in Singapore surrendered in 1942, and Japan ruled Singapore for the next 3 years. All of a sudden, both the colonizer (the British) and the colonizee (the Singaporean) were under harsh suppression of Japan. This type of actions are called "Sook Ching", which can be seen at multiple museums in Singapore.

One significant difference: memories of the Japanese occupation period are overwhelmingly negative (at least according to what I saw at museums). This is very different from Taiwan, where opinions toward the Japanese colonization period are highly divided. My explanation is, Singapore was ruled by Japan for few years, and it was completely during war time, whereas Taiwan under Japanese colonization for 50 years (1895-1945), and many people experienced improvement of life quality during that time.

【從免疫力檢出細菌還是病毒感染】

當病人發燒時，診症其中一項任務是判斷其屬於細菌感染還是病毒感染，再決定是否使用抗生素治療。但臨床上常常無法區分細菌和病毒感染，診斷具挑戰性。如果能夠快速分辨致病的種類，就可以在患者不需要時停止給他們使用抗生素。

世界衛生組織警告，我們正步入後抗生素時代：「抗生素的研發速度落後於細菌變異，常見感染在將來都足以致命。」若這趨勢持續，不少治療程序如器官移植、化療、早產嬰加護等，都將伴隨更高的風險。細菌之所以能發展出抗藥性，因它們能適應外界環境而變異。要避免抗藥性，在處方抗生素時便要更加謹慎和精準。

用於檢測病原體的工具可用於輔助診斷病原體，但有局限。例如它們依賴病原體採樣，當無法接觸或未知感染部位時便有其困難。而這些檢測對於未深入了解的新興病原體，或力有不逮。進行常規檢查則可能需要幾天的時間，它們通常涉及取樣以及在實驗室中繁殖樣本。細菌和病毒感染個案症狀臨床難以區分，導致濫用抗生素，及促使抗藥性細菌擴散。

總部位於以色列的公司 MeMed，專門研究監測人體免疫狀態的診斷解決方案。去年 11 月，該公司宣佈從歐洲創新委員會（EIC）獲得 250 萬歐元（約 2,140 萬港元）資金，以支持他們的突破創新研究。

該公司研發出基於免疫的蛋白質特徵的檢測方法 MeMed BV，可以區分細菌感染和病毒感染，從而幫助醫生確定是否合適使用抗生素治療。該公司將利用 EIC 的資金來加速其蛋白質檢測技術的發展。

MeMed BV 血液測試能整合測量三種免疫系統蛋白的水平：TRAIL、IP-10 和 CRP。與大多數其他檢測細菌或病毒的傳統方案不同，MeMed BV 利用人類免疫系統來反映所染病的種類。原理是基於細菌和病毒一旦感染人體，它們會觸發不同的蛋白質反應。例如 TRAIL 蛋白質，它在不同病毒感染的患者血液中會急劇增加，但在細菌感染患者的血液裡反而會減少。

利用人體的免疫反應，優點是採樣無需進入感染部位，因為免疫系統一直在體內循環。而技術亦具備區分病原體和移生菌（colonizer）的能力，因為免疫系統主要由致病因子觸發。多種病原體特徵會觸發免疫系統，對於不斷發展的病原體亦能有效檢測。

免疫特徵的檢測方式，需要有簡便易用的平台。名為 MeMed Key 的儀器，使用化學發光檢測技術，可分析各種細小體積的樣本類型，包括血清、血漿、毛細血管血和尿液等。儀器可於中央實驗室，甚至於門診位置設置和使用，為更快速和精準的即時檢測開闢道路。
