雖處於不同的時空，而且也發生於地球的另一面，但人類的歷史軌跡總有近似之處。

文章頗長，故節錄了以下部份。

//...當時已經有人對13州裏的獨派提出質疑：你們已有那麼高度的權利和財富了，為甚麼還要付生命財產損失的代價追求獨立？（類似這樣的問題，香港人不會覺得陌生!）

問題的答案其實已包含在上述引文裏：殖民地人怕的是母國要削減他們已有的政治和人身權利，以至進一步剝奪他們的財富。當時13州殖民地行使英國普通法，因此和英倫三島一樣，都有相當完備的陪審團制度，但問題是，一旦殖民地人被引渡到英國或13州以外的殖民地受審，審判他們的陪審團就不再是「住域之內的同儕」，而是一些與他們毫不相干、完全不認識他們的生活環境、不清楚他們所處社群裏的一般道德標準和行為規範的陌生人。這些陪審團的審判標準會與他們所處殖民地的標準不一樣，故他們能享受到的法律保障，亦會因引渡而受到削弱，甚至失去。

...事實上，人民為保衞已有的自由而作的犧牲，往往大於追求更高度民主時的。當時北美殖民者的抗爭，正正是由於害怕失去既有的自由而作出的，所發出的能量極大。這和香港社運抗爭者的奮鬥是一樣的：為了爭取還未享有的民主雙普選，香港人可以和理非20年，但當權者一旦搞送中威脅現有的人身自由，香港人沒多少天就出到火魔法、拚死。大家留意到，特府搞送中，僅僅是在原有的引導條例裏剔除一小段文字，即所謂的「排中條款」（China Exclusion Clause）。為制止這一點惡意修訂，香港人願意並付出了龐大代價。由此可推斷，習氏和林鄭下一回搞全方位限制港人自由的23條立法，毫無疑問會逼出香港的1776。

當年北美13州和近年香港

香港的1776！這是否危言聳聽？回答這問題，可以先看當年影響北美13州走上獨立不歸路的「送英」，以及去年令香港分離主義思潮澎湃不已的「送中」，二者跨大片時空平行出現，是否僅僅一對孤立的歷史偶然。為了看得清楚一些，我提議做兩種觀察，一是理出當時北美13州與英國以及今天香港與中國這兩組關係的內涵，作一框架比較；一是以北美13州殖民者在1765-1775那關鍵十年之間經歷過的事情和走過的心路，對比香港人在2014-2019這五年之間的遭遇。

北美13州的主流文化淵源在英國，各州殖民者絕大部份說英語。「殖民者（Colonist）」這身份認同，是逐漸形成的，有別於祖家的英國人；獨立革命前夕，支持獨立的殖民者自稱「愛國者（Patriots）」，而那些反對獨立的殖民者，則統稱「效忠者（Loyalist，效忠大英帝國）」。這個始自同源的蛻變和分化過程，這幾年在香港幾乎是重複了。

再從時間幅度看這身份認同的變化。13州殖民地最先設置的是維珍尼亞，於1606年由英王授權予具法人身份的維珍尼亞股份公司而成立，首批簽約的移民於翌年抵達北美落籍；由此至1783年的《巴黎和約》簽訂、英國和西歐諸國承認美利堅合眾國的獨立國身份，經歷了177年，即大約七代人的時間。對比現代香港，從1842年的《南京條約》起算，到香港人唱出《願榮光歸香港》、國際上普遍認知了「香港非中國」、香港人具獨特文化政治涵義的2019年，剛好也經歷了177年。

這個巧合，包含着必然。我們看到的是，客觀環境改變之後，人的身份認同從遺傳到變異需要七代那麼久，而且開始幾代很緩慢，異化的因子逐步累積，到最後才突變，這在當年的北美和在今天的香港都一樣。//
