Such an enjoyable read, especially to someone like me whose mathematical skill has gone rusty at this age and is no longer able to appreciate complex proofs. Alex can always explain these complicate calculation into an easy and entertaining narrative. Not surprisingly, I have met a lot of old acquaintances between chapters... The complex number, four colour problems, the Euler's magical formula ... They gave me a lot of memories and perhaps reinforced my primitive fondness to the beauty of mathematics. Yet this book is more than merely reviving my old memories, but has also introduced many new ideas (at least) to me. Early in the book I was already fascinated by the Benfords Law, a universal phenomenon which has been overlooked for century. Others included the triangulation techniques (which explained why there are trigs we see on trails), the once-popular nomogram (not monogram), the beautiful Mandelbrot iteration, the unpredictable Conway's game of life, the self contained Bourbaki textbooks...
