STORY TIME - HOW GOOGLE TRANSLATE SAVED ME FROM GOING TO JAIL / EXTORTED / KIDNAPPED? ⚠️💀 (PART 2) This “Peruvian police officer”, to this day I don’t know if he was real or not, handed me back my phone. I nervously uttered some words to google translate. Mind you it was pitch black out, I was intoxicated, and honestly scared. This is where google royally f****d up my translation. I spoke into the phone saying “we are not going anywhere with you as there’s no signs saying we can’t be on the sand dunes”. As this guy grabbed for my phone I got a glimpse of what google translated my speech into. My stomach dropped and before I could grab my phone back he read the translation: “I’m going to hit you”. The guy stepped back and started screaming at us.. in Spanish. I frantically started saying my phone made a mistake and tried to deescalate the situation by pointing at google saying “incorrecto”… lol at my limited Spanish. I don’t think he understood but he seemed spooked by the translation (hence google screwing me but also possibly saving me). He then tried to lure us away stating that we can’t be here, near the oasis/hostel, but can go further up into the darkness of the dunes, away from the oasis. I thought this was odd and all I could imagine was a news headline saying “idiot travelers found dead in the sand dunes of Peru”. Safe to say we bolted back, explained our story to our hostel and they were equally confused about this “rule”. What if I had went with him, what if my incorrect translation didn’t spook him? So many questions on what would’ve happened if he didn’t let us go. Thanks for reading guys, I figured I’d do something a little different with my captions and maybe do some story telling.
