In the eyes of his fellow practitioners, “perspectives”, “proportions” are absent in his work. But he draws on, paints on. If it is not indulgence, what is it? My curator friend visited Lok’s home and was dumb-founded. Over ten thousand hand print stamps live in a subject library, in minute categorization . What kind of a day-in day-out commitment, a mystery? Talking to Lok, one hears a large part of an elder’s life, it’s ups and downs. He says his life has been a “gloomy” one. And the “mystery” began as a way to settle this “gloominess ”. But years have passed, he reckons most these entanglements have been resolved, yet he paints on, draws on. In his word, he is obsessed. In the eyes of onlookers like me, maybe it’s because “life” still has its unknown, “feeling” needs its anchorage. Well, whatever. From indulgence, there comes obsession; and mystery summons pursuit. If not for that, all these people , objects, festivity, scenery of our city would not wander into our midst.
