Infantile amnesia - the inability to recall childhood memories. When I'm holding my son, who soon turns 2 this summer, I wonder what memories will stay with him when he grows up. Or maybe nothing at all. Unlike adults, memories formed during childhood are so fragile they are mostly susceptible to be forgotten. Buried under layers and layers of fresher, more recent memories, there childhood fragments fossilized under the eternal ice that locks them away forever in the chamber of secret. I have read stories of those who claim to remember the moment they were born, how it felt like inside the womb. Little snippets that is likely not accessible to the majority. I cannot trace back that far but certainly there are some memories during early days that were not swept away. Like when I fell down the stair, when I saw a "ghost", when the flood came to our house one night and brought along all kinds of scary insects, when I was bullied for the first time, just a few unconsciously selected memories, frozen in time that are still vivid until this day. They are all associated with a very strong visual or a certain kind of trauma - the anchor that keep these young memories berthed. I can see the connection, how they set the foundation for later decision, and these decision formed a story that eventually shaped my personality. The child who was hurt is the man who is wounded. And so this painting dwells on that story, floating in the world of oblivion, searching for an invisible memory, the origin inside us. #monochromagic3 #monochrome #watercolor #vietnamesearts #infantileamnesia
