As we shuffle through another cold December in our warm clothes, let us remember that 81yrs ago, Japanese troops finally broke through the walls of Nanking, and today commemorates the anniversary of the start of the Nanking Massacre, or the Rape of Nanking. One of the most horrific and worst atrocities in human history.
Up to 300,000 people died in six weeks as Japanese troops viciously and systematically raped, tortured, murdered and looted their way across the city which was the capital of China at the time.
The sheer scale of barbarity and violence has been documented over the decades and shock people even today.
I read the book “Rape of Nanking” by Iris Chang 20yrs ago and her version of the story has haunted me ever since.
The point of this post is not to politicise or blame or provoke hatred. Actually, quite the opposite. It is to pass the message that we as Chinese and especially the younger generation shouldn’t forget those who came before us, for us to appreciate that we are lucky to be born in much better times, and of course, to remind us that we should NEVER cheer on or seek a path of war and violence.
The world has all moved on and is a better place. Let’s keep it that way.

Imagine....
Imagine if people blamed Christianity for this act of violence.
Imagine if people searched frantically through the Bible in the hope of digging up verses which could have justified this action (which is entirely possible).
Imagine if people used this attack to pass legislation banning all Christians from entering the country.
Imagine if people started asking "moderate" Christians to condemn this act of violence.
Imagine if people created an entire anti-Christian industry of propaganda linking this Christian and Christianity in general to barbarity, violence, oppression, terrorism, etc., etc.
Imagine if people spewed the term "radical Christian terrorism" after this event.
Imagine if people wondered if Christianity is compatible with American values based on this murder spree.
Imagine if people connected this attack to far-right wing Christian militias throughout the country.
Imagine if people identified this guy's church and then called for increased surveillance around that community (and all those who might be similar or affiliated with it).
Imagine if double standards didn't exist.
