I have been working on hardcore sales floors for over twenty years. I started with classic notebooks and pens before the age of the PC, until we had internet and this view has basically been my desk setting for such a long time. And the funny thing is, I always have used reams of A4 paper to prop up my monitor. It's part of my desk, including my fountain pen, calculator and notebook. I don't want a new monitor stand.....
I remember starting on such a low salary I ate jacket potatoes with cheese and beans from a place called Benji's for ages - £1 lunch to fill me up all day. I remember not being able to afford going out with my friends, or even money to buy suits that I needed. We always stood up, boiler room style, cold calling, failing, sealing deals, making new friendships, through long long hours to hit our targets. We were punished so atrociously that nowadays new trainees would probably sue us if we tried the same thing haha. Kinda weird but I miss those hardcore days!
Sometimes I sit at my desk and look at the familiar setting and I don't know how 20+ years have flown by. I have learned many lessons on the sales floor, and I'm grateful that some of it has directed me through life. If you are in a target driven environment, make sure your KPIs are a) relevant b) measurable c) timebound d) realistic e) motivating.
Starting from the bottom, coming from a background without privilege is the best blessing of all. It makes you appreciate what you have in life.
Stay focused on your goals, but don't forget honour, love, health and laughter.
Ok enough reflecting. I need to grow my business for my loved ones.
Don't be lazy, don't make excuses, let's all go smash it!!! Your hard work will be the foundation of your dreams.
