The Power of Fasting and Prayer

God’s word reveals to us that fasting has many benefits, such as it being a channel of healing, health, answered prayers, and a great way to cast out unbelief from our hearts.

I'm sure that if God is leading you to fast, He is preparing you to receive a manifestation of blessing!

One benefit we are going to look at is increased sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s voice. We can sense God’s directions for our lives better when we fast.

When the disciples in the early church fasted, it seems like they became more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. They were able to receive God’s instructions and leading easier. It also helped them to make the right decision when faced with a big task.

“Now in the assembly that was at Antioch there were some prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they served the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, “Separate Barnabas and Saul for me, for the work to which I have called them.” Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.” (Acts 13:1-3 WEB)

If you are at a crossroads in life and need to make an important decision, the Holy Spirit may lead you to fast to seek God for His guidance and wisdom.

I believe that fasting makes one’s spirit more in tune with the spiritual things of God so we're able to hear from Him with greater clarity.

This is likely because when we fast, we are denying the flesh of its desires and are more focused on the Spirit.

Whenever fasting is mentioned in the Bible, it is mostly combined with prayer. I would liken fasting to an amplifier, making your prayers more effective by casting out unbelief from your heart and also making you more sensitive to the Holy Spirit and what He wants you to pray for.

Do you need to receive wisdom to make an important decision? Maybe you feel like you can’t sense what God wants from you at this point in time. Perhaps it’s time to dedicate a fast to the Lord, and make it a season to receive and hear from Him.

“Let the husband give his wife the affection owed her, and likewise also the wife her husband. The wife doesn’t have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise also the husband doesn’t have authority over his own body, but the wife. Don’t deprive one another, unless it is by consent for a season, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer, and may be together again, that Satan doesn’t tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But this I say by way of concession, not of commandment.” (1 Corinthians 7:3-6 WEB)

The Apostle Paul taught that there are seasons whereby we should put aside fleshly indulgences like physical intimacy with your spouse, and just commit time to fasting and prayer.

The last time I fasted, I had to make a decision whether or not to listen to someone who was many years older than me. He preached God’s word locally and overseas.

After my fast, we met up. I could clearly sense that he was speaking nonsense, and I could easily discern the motivations that were shaping his words. It was obvious that his words were not to be trusted.

If I had listened to him I might have wasted precious years of my life doing something that was not God’s will for me.

Don’t overlook the powerful combination of fasting and prayer. We need to hear clearly from God, especially in difficult seasons and moments of standing at crossroads.

Shining Bright in These Last Days

“But know this, that in the last days, grievous times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, not lovers of good, traitors, headstrong, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; holding a form of godliness, but having denied its power. But you did follow my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, steadfastness, persecutions, and sufferings: those things that happened to me at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. I endured those persecutions. The Lord delivered me out of them all. Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. But you remain in the things which you have learned and have been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them.” (2 Timothy‬ ‭3:1-5, 10-14‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

It seems that even though the world is more technologically advanced, connected, and knowledgeable than before, it has experienced a steep moral degradation in contrast to past generations. The world will only get worse.

However, we are not here to reform the world, but to cause as many who will listen to believe that Jesus is Lord and be saved. In this way, we are snatching souls out of the fire, as we await the glorious appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The more boldly you stand up for Jesus, the more persecution you will face. The world hates Jesus, and it will hate the disciples who love and follow Him.

Don’t let fear and intimidation dull your shine. There is not much time left until the church’s departure from this world. Soon, the trumpet will sound and with a shout, the Lord will cause our bodies to be transformed into glorified bodies that will never die, age, or weaken.

We should not leave this world without at least sharing the precious Gospel with the people around us. You don’t necessarily have to do it directly, but invite them to hear someone who preaches the Gospel, or give them an encouraging Christian book. Utilize the unique gifts that God has deposited in you, towards the goal of winning souls. Pray as you do these, requesting open doors for the Holy Spirit to work on their hearts.

In God’s kingdom, it seems that the martyrs and heavily persecuted ones are greatly honored and receive great rewards. “There is no love greater than this: that a man would lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus did that for us, and we can choose to do that for others, as worship unto God. Your faith, hope, and love shown for Jesus’ sake will not go unrewarded!

The Ant and the Grasshopper
The Ant and the Grasshopper, alternatively titled The Grasshopper and the Ant (or Ants), is one of Aesop's Fables, numbered 373 in the Perry Index.[1] The fable describes how a hungry grasshopper begs for food from an ant when winter comes and is refused. The situation sums up moral lessons about the virtues of hard work and planning for the future.

The fable concerns a grasshopper (in the original, a cicada) that has spent the summer singing while the ant (or ants in some versions) worked to store up food for winter. When that season arrives, the grasshopper finds itself dying of hunger and begs the ant for food. However, the ant rebukes its idleness and tells it to dance the winter away now.[3] Versions of the fable are found in the verse collections of Babrius (140) and Avianus (34), and in several prose collections including those attributed to Syntipas and Aphthonius of Antioch. The fable's Greek original cicada is kept in the Latin and Romance translations. A variant fable, separately numbered 112 in the Perry Index,[4] features a dung beetle as the improvident insect which finds that the winter rains wash away the dung on which it feeds.
