This is a thought-provoking collection of essays on the human body, written by a Scottish general practitioner with a background in neurosurgery, emergency medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, and family medicine (how he managed to train in so many specialties is beyond me and also beyond the scope of this review). Dr. Francis seems to be a renaissance man of sorts, well-read in history, geography, literature, and even theology. His background makes this book a great read for medical professionals and laypeople alike, as every reader is likely to learn something new.
This book is divided into 18 essays, each focusing on a specific body part. Dr. Francis often starts each chapter with a clinical case. Throughout the chapter he adds in tidbits from Descartes to Disney, wandering off sometimes to describe how Pontus Pilate probably crucified Jesus through his wrist and not his hand. It’s like going on a city tour of the human body with a funny and knowledgeable guide. Highly recommended.
