當要用 Past Continuous Tense (過去進行式) 既時候，究竟幾時用 when 幾時用 while 呢？
When 同 While 都係用嚟講「同時發生」既事 (indicate same-time activites)，但呢兩個絕對唔可以撈亂用！

如果用 when, 就係指一件事打斷另一件事。(≈ at the time)
但如果係用while, 就係指兩件同時進行既事，就連時間長度都相約。(≈ throughout the time / meanwhile)

簡單黎講⛑
WHEN：一瞬間既事 (e.g. mom came home, the phone rang, I broke the window)
WHILE：時間較長既事 (e.g. I was talking to her, she was doing homework, he was eating)

1️⃣ WHEN Tom came home, Mary was playing video games. / Mary was playing video games WHEN Tom came home.
6:00 - 7:00 p.m. —> playing video games 🎮
6:30 p.m. —> came home 🏠

2️⃣ WHILE I was doing homework, mom was cooking. / I was doing homework WHILE mom was cooking.
6:00 - 7:00 p.m. —> doing homework 📚
6:00 - 7:00 p.m. —> cooking 🍳

因為考試之前太趕，到現在才有時間教過去進行式，最初我以為不算太複雜，但當我把when和while放進去之後，就全都亂了。我要求他們用when 和while 在作句，但發現他們把When 用作「當」， 也把所謂長短動作的concept搞亂了。所以先還原基本步，再單教past continuous tense 的第一個用法：就是過去某個時間你在進行的動作。

這次的八仙樂園粉塵爆炸事件，每每關注消息都是心疼與擔憂，以下提供如何對外說明災難事件的表達。
1) A pre-dawn blaze at a popular five-star hotel last Saturday killed 15 people,including guests,employees and fire fighters.
上週六，某家著名五星級飯店發生凌晨大火，奪去十五條人命，其中包括房客、員工及消防隊員。
【解說】在此句中，要表示過去發生的事實、在過去的某一瞬間發生的事、不屬於現在的事實，就要用「過去簡單式」表示。
2) While fire fighters were trying hard to put out the fire,all of the people caught in the hotel were fleeing in panic.
當消防員努力撲滅大火時，受困在旅館裡的民眾驚慌失措地逃離。
【解說】此句是表示兩個持續的動作在同時進行，所以兩個都要用「過去進行式」表達。
3) In this tragic incident,several victims were found severely injured and taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.
在這場悲慘的事件中，幾個嚴重受傷的受害者被尋獲後，就被送去醫院做緊急治療。
【解說】
● 此句中的 found, injured, taken 都表示被動的語氣，前面要搭配be動詞。
● severely 是修飾受傷的程度，所以要用副詞表達。
