有些人能整理數百篇文獻，一年發表 10 篇 meta-analysis，但有些人卻連一個主題都讀不完。

因為，論文是作品，得讀沒錯。
但更重要的，是你帶著怎樣的「目的」去讀這些作品。

要晨會報告，讀的重點是，與科內臨床工作相關的細節，以及從文字中看出不同醫院的資源與文化不同。要整理 guideline，論文閱讀重點是各篇的 indication、outcome 與普遍的適用性。要發表 meta-analysis，重點當然就是研究設計、評估量表與該文章的特殊意義。甚至，同是實證，要做 EBM 競賽，與要發表 meta-analysis，所閱讀的重點，也有所不同。

缺乏這種「目的」感，看 paper 只好逐字逐句、鉅細靡遺的讀，自然速度就慢，而且 ＃連重點都抓不太到，更別說本來想完成的成果，品質不佳，甚至半途而廢。

田野工作(fieldwork)是人類學研究方法的核心。隨著「做田野」成為學校社會科學領域乃至業界諸如市場調查分析與使用者經驗研究等範疇時常見的詞彙，田野裡人際互動與社會關係的建立與經營之道成為重要的議題。在 新作坊 的這篇文章，帶我們看到，進入田野後產生的不只是「約訪」、「做訪談」的研究者與被研究者關係。對於與當地人接觸互動如何「觀」與「察」以蒐集觀察田野調查資料與分析，生活日常「聊天」具有重要的意義。

一直往學術社群中走去，人類學逐漸不再是大家沒聽過的神祕概念，但「聽過」仍是基於某種既定印象，例如「人類學家不寫paper，只寫小說」。也經常有人說，我們做研究的時候不像在做研究，沒有穿著白袍、沒有使用結構嚴謹的問卷、沒有拿著高科技儀器（頂多就是相機、錄影機、錄音筆），通常只有一本筆記本、一支手機、或什麼都沒有，好跟「報導人」（研究參與者）好好聊天，或一起從事他們正在做的事。

事實上，「聊天」這個與人群互動的方式，並非專屬於人類學學門，但民族誌式田野工作中的「聊天」，確實有其特殊功能與邏輯。人類學家/田野工作者以自己作為「研究工具」，用「聊天」創造一個符合真實人際互動的情境。

我們經歷了一個「建立關係」的過程，包含共食、共飲、共作（例：下田），及生命禮儀的共襄盛舉（例：慶典）與陪伴（例：喪禮）。其中，「聊天」串起了這其中所有的人際互動。大家圍坐分享食物、飲料，一邊暢聊的場景是部落中最日常的活動。在幾次這樣的場合上，部落長輩對我說：「妳想問什麼就問吧！」他們知道我「研究者」的身份，怕「浪費我的時間」，和藹地建議我善用時間蒐集資料，但這並非我出現在那些場合的本意。某一次我回應：「今天是想來陪大家聊聊天、聽聽故事，也學習大家重視的事，沒有特別要問什麼啦！」長輩們聽完後，表示認同與覺得受到尊重，有人直接說：「這樣說就對了。」

在剛進入田野的階段，很多時候「聊天」的用意並非獲取研究資料，而是傾聽報導人希望訴說的個人想法、故事、日常生活遭遇的困難、想吐的苦水等等。報導人與田野工作者的關係，到後來往往不僅止於研究者與被研究者，而是在真實的人際互動中找到連結。臺東大學團隊到部落參加喪禮時，我們往往跨越了「研究者」或「觀察者」角色，到場的目的不是記錄，而是致意與陪伴，希望為喪家帶來一點走過悲傷的力量。

臺東大學團隊藉由「聊天」接觸部落不同群體，逐步拼湊出部落生活的樣態。倘若沒有這些深入、個人化的連結，很難真正掌握田野地或研究社群的脈絡，也難以找出應該被討論、卻易被忽略或被認為是不足為外人道的議題。因此面對報導人的信任，田野工作者有保護他們的義務。若「聊天」的內容成為研究資料，對其之保存與使用將份外謹慎。

經由多次聊天，感受出部分部落成員對於外來者跑來學走他們的文化與知識未必有好感。他們更想知道的是，這些（似乎）握有更多文化、社會、經濟資源的學者可以對部落有何貢獻？同樣地，對話過程中發現，「共學共作」、「把主體性還給部落」等希望凸顯部落話語權與能動性的論述，也不必然獲得部落一致認可，反而有聲音期望我們帶著明確目的或問題意識，直接告訴他們該做什麼、怎麼解決問題、如何有成效。

此種情況下，「聊天」被理解為田野工作者們還在不清楚狀況的階段。我們認為釐清「他們想做什麼」是不可或缺的第一步，但他們期待的是我們提出「我們想做什麼」。因應這些反應，田野工作團隊持續與眾多不同年齡、立場、背景的部落成員溝通、討論，藉此聽見不同聲音，也讓不同群體覺得受到尊重，增加計畫的公共性、正當性、參與度、包容度。田野工作者們長期在部落走動，參與各種日常生活中非正式的互動，不急著解釋或提解決方案，而是傾聽部落說出自己的看法或提案，讓他們慢慢感受到誠意，並理解我們工作的步調與邏輯。雙方已逐漸磨合出共識，而這場「聊天」馬拉松還會繼續。
